Maintenance : Changing a tyre

30-12-22 | Simon

To change an inner tube on a bike, you will need the following tools:

1. A new inner tube

2. A tire lever (or a flat object like a spoon or a small screwdriver)

3. A hand pump (or a CO2 inflator if you have one)

Here are the steps to change an inner tube on a bike:

- Remove the wheel from the bike. Depending on your bike, you may need to remove the skewer (quick-release lever) or loosen the nuts that hold the wheel in place. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to your bike's owner's manual.

- Once the wheel is off, use the tire lever to pry the tire away from the rim. Start at one end of the tire and work your way around the tire, using the tire lever to lift the tire up and away from the rim. Be careful not to damage the rim or the tire.

- Once you have removed the tire from the rim, remove the inner tube from the tire. You may need to wiggle the inner tube a bit to get it out of the tire.

- Inspect the inside of the tire for any foreign objects or debris that may have caused the flat. Remove any debris that you find.

- Inflate the new inner tube slightly and place it inside the tire. Make sure that the inner tube is not twisted or pinched anywhere inside the tire.

- Begin to re-mount the tire onto the rim, starting at one end and working your way around the tire. Make sure that the tire is evenly seated on the rim and that the inner tube is not pinched between the tire and the rim.

- Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. You can find the recommended tire pressure on the side of the tire or in your bike's owner's manual.

- Re-install the wheel onto the bike and make sure that it is securely fastened.

That's it! You should now have a fully repaired inner tube on your bike.
